Bobcat boys win state bowling title, girls place 5th

The Western Dubuque boys bowling team is the Class 2A state champion. The Bobcats tallied 3,160 pins in Thursday's state tournament, beating Ottumwa by 25 pins to win the title. Drew Naderman rolled a two game totalof 513 to tied for third place, while Nick Stecklein placed sixth with a 496. The Western Dubuque girls also participated in the state tournament in Waterloo and took fifth place. Morgan Theisen lead the bobcats with a two game total of 405.

High School Basketball Update

High School basketball continues Saturday night on KDST as Beckman and Cascade meet the Sub-State 4 final at Manchester. The 14-8 Blazers are seeking their 6th trip to state, and first since 2007. The 22-1 Cougars are playing for a 5th consecutive trip to Des Moines, and 10th in school history. Tomorrow night's game starts at 7, with the pre-game at 6:30.

In boys tournament action Thursday night, Marion defeated West Delaware 51-41. The Ed-Co vs. Wapsie Valley game at Oelwein was postponed to tonight. The winner will play Dunkerton in the sub-state game tomorrow night at Independence.

Beckman and Cascade Boys to Meet in Sub State Final

The Beckman and Cascade boys basketball teams will play for a trip to the state tournament after winning their district games Wednesday night. The Blazers edged Waukon 64-62 in a terrific game at Western Dubuque. Waukon lead 29-26 at half, but Beckman opened the third quarter on an 8-0 run and took a 46-43 lead into the fourth. The Indians rebounded a missed Beckman free throw with five seconds left, but their three point attempt at the buzzer was blocked, securing a two point Blazer win. Cascade advanced to the sub-state game with a 42-38 win against Regina in Maquoketa. The Cougars and Blazers will play at West Delaware Saturday night to decide who goes to state. We will have that game on 99.3 and online, with the pre-game beginning around 6:30 and the game at 7.

In girls basketball news, the state pairings are now set for all five classes. Cascade earned the #3 seed in Class 2A and will face Dike-New Hartford in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. next Wednesday. The winner will play Panorama or North Union in the semi-finals next Friday. North Union advanced to state by upsetting defending champ Western Christian 50-48 last night. On the other side of the bracket, Treynor plays West Sioux and Regina faces Grundy Center. Our girls state tournament coverage begins Tuesday with Monticello playing Clear Lake in the 3A quarterfinals at 3:15 p.m. We will then have the Cascade game Wednesday morning.

High School Basketball Update

Two boys basketball district finals will be played tonight after being postponed from Tuesday. We will have the Beckman vs. Waukon game at Western Dubuque with the pre-game show beginning around 6:45. The winner will play Cascade or Regina in Saturday's sub-state game at Manchester. The Cougars vs. Regals game will be played at Maquoketa tonight.

In Class 1A tournament action Tuesday night, Ed-Co defeated Central Elkader 61-47. The Vikings play Wapsie Valley at Oelwein tomorrow night, and the winner advances to Saturday's sub-state at Indpendence to play Dunkerton or Tripoli.

In girls basketball, a pair of 2A regional finals will be played tonight after being postponed on Monday. Western Christian plays North Union while IKM-Manning plays West Sioux. The 2A state bracket will be set once those games are completed, so Cascade will find out later tonight who and when they play at state next week. There were also postponements in Classes 1A, 4A and 5A, with those games being played tonight. Teams that did qualify for state in 4A include Marion and Center Point-Urbana.

Cascade Girls Advance to State for 5th Time in 6 Seasons, Beckman Boys Hoops Tuesday Night on KDST

The Cascade girls basketball team has advanced to state for the fifth time in six seasons. The Cougars beat conference foe Bellevue 50-41 in Monday's regional final. Cascade lead 16-8 after the first, but Bellevue won the second quarter 19-10 to lead by one at the half. The game was tied at 38 going into the fourth before the Cougars pulled away for the victory. Anne Ryan lead Cascade with 14 points, Nicole McDermott had 13, Abbie Ruggeberg 9, Rachel Trumm scored 8 and Jordan Simon added 6 points. The Cougars, who improved to 22-3, will play in the state quarterfinals either next Tuesday or Wednesday. Two of the class 2A regional finals were postponed to Wednesday, so pairings will be determined until after those game are played. In other regional finals Monday night, #9 Dike-New Hartford upset #1 North Linn 64-53, #8 Grundy Center beat #13 Pekin 44-36, #7 Regina defeated Danville 55-43, #3 Panorama edged #15 Des Moines Christian 36-33, and #2 Treynor hammered Mount Ayr 76-42. The Wednesday night games will be #4 Western Christian vs. #10 North Union and #11 West Sioux vs. #14 IKM-Manning.

In boys playoff basketball Monday night, Waterloo East defeated Western Dubuque 53-40 and West Delaware beat Anamosa 61-31. Playoff action continues tonight on KDST as the Beckman boys play Waukon in a 2A district final at Western Dubuque. Coverage will begin around 6:45. High School Basketball Update

The high school basketball postseason continues this week. Tonight we have a girls 2A Regional Final as the Cascade Cougars face Bellevue at Dubuque Senior. The pre-game show will begin around 6:45, with tip-off at 7. In boys basketball playoff games, the Western Dubuque boys host Waterloo East and West Delaware is hosting Anamosa. Tuesday night our boys coverage resumes as Beckman faces Waukon in a 2A district final at Western Dubuque beginning at 7 pm. The winner of that game will face Cascade or Regina in the sub-state final on Saturday. The Cougars and Regals district final game is at Maquoketa tomorrow night. Next Tuesday will be begin state tournament coverage as the Monticello girls play Clear Lake in the class 3A quarterfinals at 3:15 p.m.

Beckman, Cascade Boys Advance in Basketball Playoffs

The Cascade and Beckman boys basketball teams won their respective district semi-final games Thursday night. The Cougars had four players score in double-figures as they defeated West Branch 61-51. Brock Simon lead the way with 13. In the other game at Cascade, Regina jumped out to a 19-3 first quarter lead and shot 60 percent as they beat Monticello 70-35. The Regals and Cougars meet in the District Final at Maquoketa Tuesday night. In other district action, Beckman defeated Oelwein 81-62. The Blazers will now face Waukon in the District Final at Western Dubuque Tuesday night. The Indians held on to defeat Jesup 59-56. The winners of the Cascade/Regina and Beckman/Waukon games will meet in the Sub-State game next Saturday at West Delaware. Tonight we have girls tournament action as the Cascade Cougars host MFL MarMac in a 2A regional semi-final. The pre-game show will begin around 6:45, with the game beginning at 7. Saturday night we have a 3A Regional Final as Monticello faces Osage at Independence. We will also have updates on the Western Dubuque @ Cedar Rapids Xavier and Anamosa vs. Crestwood tournament games tomorrow night.

Cascade Girls Advance in Tournament, Maquoketa Valley Falls to SF, Geraghty Gets Win #500

The Cascade girls basketball team has advanced to the regional semi-final round. Abbie Ruggeberg lead all scorers with 22 as the Cougars defeated East Buchanan 67-45 Tuesday night. Anne Ryan added 17 for Cascade, which will host MFL MarMac Friday night. The Bulldogs defeated South Winn 62-39 last night. You can hear Friday's game on KDST. On the other side of the 2A Region 4 bracket, Sumner-Fredericksburg edged Maquoketa Valley 62-60 in Delhi, while Bellevue defeated North Cedar 58-49. That regional semi-final will be played at Beckman on Friday. The winners advance to the regional final Monday night at Dubuque Senior. Tonight we have class 4A action as Western Dubuque hosts Clinton at 7. The winner will play at Cedar Rapids Xavier Saturday night. In Class 3A tonight Monticello hosts Vinton-Shellsburg while Anamosa plays host to Mount Vernon. Thursday night it's back to boys hoops with a double-header at Cascade. Monticello plays Regina at 6:30, followed by the Cougars against West Branch. You can listen to both games on KDST.

In regular season action Tuesday night the Western Dubuque boys defeated Maquoketa 58-51, giving Coach Dennis Geraghty his 500th career victory. Geraghty thought he had reached that milestone earlier this season, but after reviewing his records, found an error that had left him seven wins shy of 500. The Bobcats are back in action Monday hosting Waterloo East in the first round of the playoffs.

Iowa State Wrestling Tournament Opens Today with Team Duals

The state wrestling tournament begins today with team duals. West Delaware faces Assumption in the 2A quarterfinals at 11 this morning. The Hawks will wrestle again at 1 and then at 4:30 or 6:30. The individual tournament starts tomorrow.

Monticello Boys Advance in Tournament, Girls Tournament Coverage Resumes Tonight

The Monticello boys basketball team has advanced to the district semi-finals with a 66-57 win against North Cedar.  Senior Alex Nealson lead a balanced attack with 21 points, Kyle Sperfslage had 17, Justin Recker scored 15 and Jacob Manternach added 10 points for the Panthers.  Ethan Sahr had a game high 26 for the Knights, who end the season at 6-16.  In the other game at Monticello last night, West Branch defeated Bellevue 77-58.  Monticello will face Regina in the district semi-final at 6:30 Thursday at Cascade, while the Cougars face West Branch at 8 p.m.  You can listen to both games on KDST. In other 2A district action Monday night, Oelwein defeated Sumner-Fredericksburg 67-45 and Jesup beat North Fayette-Valley 57-41.  Oelwein plays at Beckman Thursday night, while Jesup goes to Waukon.  Tonight we have girls playoff basketball as Cascade hosts East Buchanan at 7 p.m.  In other games in that bracket Maquoketa Valley hosts Sumner-Fredericksburg, North Cedar plays at Bellevue and MFL MarMac hosts South Winn.  The winners advance to the regional semi-finals on Friday.  Tomorrow night we have more girls tournament action as Western Dubuque hosts Clinton.

HS Basketball Update

High School Basketball tournament action continues tonight on KDST as the Monticello boys host North Cedar in first round action.  The Panthers defeated the Knights twice during the regular season.  Tonight's game will begin around 8 pm.  In the first game tonight at Monticello, West Branch plays Bellevue at 6:30.  The winner of that game will play Cascade, while the Monticello/North Cedar Winner will face Regina, with both of those games at Cascade Thursday night.  In other 2A boys tournament action tonight, Jesup plays North Fayette Valley and Oelwein face Sumner-Fredericksburg, with both game at Oelwein.  The Jesup/North Fayette Valley winner goes to Waukon Thursday, while the winner of the Oelwein vs. Sumner-Fredericksburg game plays at Beckman.

Girls tournament action resumes tomorrow night on KDST as Cascade hosts East Buchanan at 7 p.m.  The winner will face South Winn or MFL Mar-Mac Friday night at Cascade. In other 2A regional action on Tuesday, Maquoketa Valley hosts Sumner-Fredericksburg and Bellevue hosts North Cedar.  The winners of those games will play at Beckman Friday night.  Wednesday night we will have Class 4A action as Western Dubuque hosts Clinton.

Western Dubuque Girls will Host Clinton in First Round of Playoffs

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released the regional pairings for the class 4A and 5A basketball playoffs.  In class 4A,Western Dubuque will host Clinton in a first round matchup on Wednesday the 14th.  The winner will play at Cedar Rapids Xavier on the 17th.  On the other side of the bracket, Maquoketa will host Central DeWitt, with that winner going to Center Point-Urbana.  The regional final will be hosted by the highest remaining seed on the 20th.

Bobcats Defeat Blazers in Girls Basketball

The final WaMaC meeting between the Western Dubuque and Beckman girls basketball teams went down to the wire, with the Bobcats holding on for a 36-34 win.  Western Dubuque went 10-12 at the free throw line in the first half and built a 20-11 lead.  The Blazers would start their rally in the third quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 10-6 to pull withing five.  Emma Baumhover, who scored seven points in the 4th quarter, hit a quick three to push the Bobcats lead to 29-21.  Beckman would again rally, closing to within 33-32, but could not take the lead.  Two free throws put Western Dubuque ahead 35-32, followed by a McKenzie Arens jumper to again get the Blazers within one at 35-34 with two seconds left.  The Bobcats added a free-throw, and the Blazers final shot was short at the buzzer.  Western Dubuque is now 14-4 overall and 9-3 in the WaMaC East.  Beckman is 11-8, 7-5 in the division.

Derr Resigns as Football Coach at Beckman Catholic

Beckman Catholic varsity football coach Jim Derr has resigned.  Derr has been with the Blazers football program for a total of 39 years, the last four as varsity head coach.  He lead Beckman to a 25-16 record, with two district titles and two playoff appearances.  Derr will remain as Tech Coordinator at Beckman.  Additionally, Beckman sophomore football coach Thomas McGuire has accepted the position of head football coach at Boone High School.

Beckman Boys Defeat Western Dubuque in Final WaMaC Meeting

The Beckman boys defeated Western Dubuque 67-60 in their final WaMaC meeting Monday night.  The Bobcats jumped to an early lead, which stood at 32-29 at halftime.  The Blazers took the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Western Dubuque 17-9 before winning the 4th quarter 21-19. Beckman was plus nine at the free throw line, going 25-for-30, compared to Western Dubuque's tally of 16-for-20. Mitch Gehling lead Beckman with 17 points, Scott Olberding had 15 and Jackson Bennett added 14.  Calvin Harris had a game-high 22 for the Bobcats, while Jordan Lake added 14.  The Blazers improve to 11-6 overall and 7-5 in the WaMaC East.  Western Dubuque is now 13-4, with a 10-2 record in the division.  Tonight is the final WaMaC matchup for the girls teams as Beckman hosts Western Dubuque.  You can heal all the action on 99-3 and online starting around 7:30.

Beckman, Western Dubuque Boys Meet in Final WaMaC Matchup

The final WaMaC conference meeting between the Beckman and Western Dubuque boys basketball teams takes place tonight as the Bobcats host the Blazers. Western Dubuque, which defeated Beckman in overtime in their first meeting this season, is 13-3 overall and 10-1 in the WaMaC East.  The Blazers are 10-6 and 6-5 in the WaMaC East. You can hear all the action tonight on KDST and online beginning around 7:30.  We will have the girls matchup between the Blazers and Bobcats tomorrow night. Western Dubuque and Beckman, along with Central Dewitt and Maquoketa, joined the WaMaC in 2003.  After originally being denied membership in the league, this expansion only occurred because the four schools petitioned to the state for inclusion in the WaMaC after the breakup of the Big Bend. The WaMaC, which currently has 16 teams, will drop to 14 as Western Dubuque leaves for the MVC and Anamosa will join the River Valley.

High School Basketball

Monticello defeated Maquoketa Valley in high school basketball Thursday night.  In the girls game, junior guard Sam Wall scored 22 points in the first half as the Wildcats built a 34-26 lead at the break.  The Panthers started strong in the third quarter and outscored Maquoketa Valley 22-10 to take a 48-44 lead into the fourth and used strong free throw shooting down the stretch to earn a 70-61 victory in Delhi.  Taylor McDonald lead Monticello with 22 points, Lauren Rieshad 17 and Jordan Kuper added 16. Wall had 34 for the Wildcats, while Payton Ries added 18.  The Panthers are 14-4, while Maquoketa Valley is now 16-4. In the boys game, Monticello defeated Maquoketa Valley 52-49.  The Panthers jumped out to a 23-14 first quarter lead, and lead 33-24 at the break.  Maquoketa Valley responded by outscoring the Panthers 17-10 in the third, highlighted by four 3's by Tyson Tucker.  Monticello maintained the slim lead throughout the fourth quarter and held on for the three point victory.  The Panthers improve to 8-8 while the Wildcats are 4-14.  Tyson Tucker lead all scorers with 25,while Alex Nealson had 15 for the Panthers.

Major Changes Approved for Iowa High School Football Playoff Qualifying

The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control approved changes to football’s postseason qualification, district football format, and to allow out-of-state competition for the 2018-19 seasons at Wednesday’s monthly meeting.

Attached is a news release on those changes, as well as an FAQ sheet for the new RPI system that will be used to determine at-large playoff qualifiers.

Football classifications and district assignments for 2018-19 were also approved at the meeting. Once finalized and sent to member schools, they will be released to the public on Thursday, January 25.

High School Basketball 1/23

The Beckman boys basketball team improved to 10-5 with a 68-64 win against Mount Vernon Tuesday night.  The Mustangs lead 15-14 after the first quarter, then outscored the Blazers 26-15 in the second quarter to build a 41-29 lead at the break.  Mount Vernon made 8 3's in the first half, but was held to one 3 in the second half.  Beckman fought back to tie the game at 53, outscoring the Mustangs 24-12 in the 3rd before closing out the 4-point win.  Mitch Gehling scored 21 and Jackson Bennett added 19 for the Blazers, whiled Drew Adams had 17 and Cale Snedden scored 15 for Mount Vernon.  The Blazers are 6-4 in the WaMac East, while the Mustangs are 5-5 in league play.  In other boys action Tuesday night:

Fred Martin honored by IHSBCA

Beckman Catholic Baseball Coach Fred Martin has been honored by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association.  Martin was named the Class 2A Northeast District Coach of the Year, and was selected as the 2A State Coach of the Year.  Martin, the longtime assistant to the late Tom Jenk Jr., stepped into the roll of Co-Coach and helped lead the Blazers to the 2017 state title.

In high school basketball Tuesday night the West Delaware boys defeated Beckman 71-47.  The Hawks jumped out to a 24-18 first quarter lead, which grew to 37-24 at halftime, and 54-34 after three quarters.  Derek Krogman lead all scorers with 21 points, while Tyler Kelley added 12 for the Hawks. Mitch Gehling lead Beckman with 18, and Michael Keegan had 12. West Delaware improves to 9-4, while the Blazers are 8-5.

HS Basketball

Cascade hosted Beckman in high school basketball action on Saturday. The Cougar girls defeated the Blazers 60-30 in their matchup. The game was tied at 8 after the first quarter, but Cascade would outscore the Blazers 41-13 in the middle quarters to take control and earn the win. Abbie Ruggeberg lead all scorers with 18 points, while Jordan Simon added 13 for the Cougars. Sydney Steffen and Sydney Arens each had 9 to lead Beckman. In the boys game, Cascade defeated Beckman 58-43. The Cougars lead 10-8 after the first quarter, and built a 27-20 halftime lead. They would push that lead to 41-29 at the end of the 3rd. Beckman started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to close within five, but the Cougars kept them at bay and pulle daway again for the 15 point victory. Harris Hoffman, who sat most of the first half in foul trouble, lead the Cougars with 14 points, all in the second half. Mitch Gehling tallied 19 for the Blazers.

OnFriday, the Western Dubuque boys defeated Marion 63-56, giving CoachDennis Geraghty his 500th career victory. Geraghty is159-61 in his 10th year at Western Dubuque. Now in his 39th year, hehas coached at schools in all 4 classes & ranks 14th among activecoaches in career wins.

Western Dubuque Defeats Beckman in Girls Basketball

Western Dubuque defeated Beckman 54-35 in girls basketball Tuesday night. Lindsey Eimers lead a balanced attack for the Bobcats with 15 points. Emma Baumhover, Chloe Baumgartner and Karly Fagan each scored nine and McKenzie Maahs added 8 as Western Dubuque improved to 6-2 in their final game before the break. Sydney Arens lead Beckman with six points. The Blazers, who are 6-3, host Oelwein Thursday night.

Western Dubuque defeated Beckman 66-58 in overtime Monday night in boys basketball.  This is the third OT win of the season for the Bobcats, who improve to 7-0.  Western Dubuque lead 15-7 after the 1st, and 27-20 at halftime.  Beckman outscored the Bobcats 18-9 in the third to take a 38-36 lead.  A back-and-forth fourth quarter found the Bobcats leading 50-48 in the closing seconds before Micheal Keegan tied it with four second left in regulation force the extra session.  Beckman is now 4-3.  Jordan Lake lead all scorers with 22 for Western Dubuque, while Jackson Bennett had 19 for Beckman.  Basketball continues tonight on KDST as the Western Dubuque girls host Beckman. Coverage will begin around 7:20.

Columbus Defeats Beckman in State Volleyball

Columbus defeated Beckman 3 sets to 1 in the State Volleyball Quarterfinals Wednesday morning.  The Sailors won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-18.  Beckman took the third set 25-20 to stay alive before Columbus closed the match with a 29-27 win in set four.  The Blazers, who were making their sixth appearance at state and first since 2006, end the season at 31-13.  The Sailors, who improved to 34-8, will face Carroll Kuemper in the semi-finals at 2 p.m. today.  Kuemper swept Iowa Fall-Alden in their match on Wednesday.  In the other 3A semi-final, Osage plays Sioux Center.

Beckman Ready for 6th Trip to State Volleyball

The Beckman Volleyball team will take to the court today at the State Tournament in Cedar Rapids Wednesday morning.  This is the sixth trip to state for the Blazers, their first since 2006.  Beckman will face Waterloo Columbus, which lost to Western Christian in the 2A title match last year and is at state for the third straight season.  Blazers coach Todd Troutman, who is leading his 5th team to state, talks about the matchup with the Sailors.

Cascade Hosts Union in State Football Quarterfinals

For the second time in three weeks, Cascade will host Union in High School Football, this time in the state quarterfinals.  The Cougars defeated the Knights 28-21 in the regular season finale on October 20th to claim the district title.  Despite the loss, Union earned a wild-card for the playoffs and made the most of it, defeating Aplington-Parkersburg 42-0 last Friday to set up tonight's re-match with Cascade.  The Cougars enter tonight averaging 39.4 points on offense, while the Knights average 37.3 per game.  You can hear all the action on 99-3 and online by going to kdstradio.com or using the TuneIn app.

Beckman Punches Ticket to State Volleyball

The Beckman Blazers have punched their ticket to the State Volleyball Tournament for the sixth time. Beckman defeated Assumption 3 sets to 1 in the Regional Final played Monday night at Anamosa.  The Blazers took set one 25-17, while the Knights earned a 25-20 victory in set two. Beckman then prevailed 25-19 in the third, and closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.  Here is Blazers coach Todd Troutman after the match.

Beckman, which is headed to state for the first time since 2006, earned the #6 seed and will face #3 seed Waterloo Columbus in the 3A quarterfinals at 10 a.m. next Wednesday at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.  In the other 3A matches, Osage plays Tipton in the 4 vs. 5 matchup, top seed Sioux Center faces Red Oak, and 2nd seeded Kuemper plays Iowa Falls-Alden.

High School Volleyball continues tonight on KDST as Beckman faces Assumption in a 3A Regional Final at Anamosa.  The Knights defeated the Blazers in 5 sets in the regional final a year ago.  Beckman is seeking it's sixth trip to state and first since 2006.  Tonight's match begins at 7.

Hall of Fame Coach Tom Jenk Jr. Passes Away

Hall of Fame Beckman Baseball Coach Tom Jenk Jr. passed away early Sunday following a battle with brain cancer.  He was 64. Jenk compiled 1,088 wins during his time with the Blazers, and was able to make the trip to Des Moines in July as they won their 5th state title.  Arrangements for Tom Jenk Jr. are pending at Kramer Funeral Home.

Cascade advances to football quarterfinals, rematch with Union The Cascade Cougars advanced to the state football quarterfinals with win against West Liberty Friday night.  Austin Lieurance led a strong rushing attack, compiling 255 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns as the Cougars defeated the Comets 49-21.  That sets up a rematch with Union, which defeated Aplington-Parkersburg 42-0 in their opening round matchup.  The Cougars ,who defeated Union 28-21 in the regular season finale, will host the Knights this Friday at 7 p.m.  You can hear that game on KDST and online at kdstradio.com or by using the TuneIn Radio app.

Regional Volleyball 10/24

For the second straight year, Beckman will face Assumption in the volleyball regional final.  The Blazers advanced with a sweep against Camanche Tuesday night.  Scores were 25-22, 25-15 and 25-23.  The Knights defeated West Liberty in four sets, with scores of 26-24,22-25, 25-15, 25-23.  Beckman and Assumption play in the regional final Monday night at Anamosa.  The Knights defeated the Blazers in five sets last year.  The winner advances to the state tournament, with the 3A quarterfinals on November 8th.  In other regional action Tuesday night, Wahlert swept Western Dubuque 25-17, 25-16, 25-18, and Columbus defeated West Delaware in four sets, with scores of 25-16,25-14, 24-26, 25-20.

Volleyball Playoff Update

Cascade and Maquoketa Valley fell in Regional Volleyball Monday night.  The Cougars fell in straight sets at Bellevue, with scores of 26-24,25-12 and 28-26.  Cascade ends the season at 16-19.  The Comets plays North Cedar at Cascade Thursday night.  Maquoketa Valley hosted East Buchanan last night, and the Bucs earned a 3 sets to 1 victory in Delhi.  Scores were 22-25, 25-11, 27-25 and 25-23.  In Class 1A, Starmont swept Central Elkader.  The Stars host Don Bosco Thursday night.  Volleyball continues tonight on KDST as Western Dubuque plays at Wahlert in the Regional Semi-Final beginning at 7.  The winner will face Clinton or Assumption in the Regional Final Monday night. In Class 3A tonight, Beckman hosts Camanche and West Delaware hosts Waterloo Columbus.

High School Volleyball

The High School Volleyball postseason resumes tonight.  We will have Class 2A action tonight as Cascade plays at Bellevue.  The Cougars defeated Clayton Ridge in the opening round last Tuesday, while the Comets had a first-round bye.  Bellevue defeated Cascade 3-2 in the conference matchup on August 31st.  Tonight's match will begin at 7.  The winner will play Lisbon or North Cedar Thursday night.  In other 2A action, Maquoketa Valley is hosting East Buchanan.  In Class 1A, Starmont hosts Central Elkader.  Tuesday night we will broadcast the Western Dubuque vs. Wahlert match. A lso tomorrow night, Beckman hosts Camanche and West Delaware hosts Columbus.

High School Football

The Cascade Cougars completed an unbeaten regular season Friday night, defeating Union 28-21.  Quarterback Harris Hoffman threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Cougars captured the District 4 title.  Cascade will host West Liberty in first round action this Friday.  You can hear that game on KDST.  Two other teams qualified from District 4.  Runner-up Waukon plays at Clear Lake, and Union, which earned a wild-card, plays at Aplington-Parkersburg.  West Delaware also qualified for the playoffs at the champion of 3A District 4. High School Volleyball 10/12

The Beckman Volleyball Team took 2nd place in the Wamac Conference Tournament Thursday night.  The Blazers defeated West Delaware 25-19, 25-18 in the quarterfinals, then edged Center Point-Urbana, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the semi-final.  Beckman faced Marion in the championship and fell 2 sets to 1, with scores of 25-23, 24-26, 15-10.  Western Dubuque defeated Solon in three sets in the quarterfinals, then lost 25-21, 25-23 to Marion in the semi-finals.

It's week 8 of the High School Football season. Last night, Western Dubuque defeated Davenport West 40-13. The Bobcats are now 4-4 this season. We will have class 2A action tonight on KDST with Beckman hosting Monticello. The pre-game show will begin around 7:20, with the kick-off at approximately 7:30.

Volleyball Scores 10/5

Beckman defeated West Delaware in volleyball Thursday night to finish at 6-1 in Wamac play.  The Blazers edged the Hawks 28-26 in the opening set, and took the 2nd set 25-12. West Delaware rallied for a 25-22 victory in set 3 before the Blazers closed it out with a 25-15 win in the 4th set.

High School Football continues tonight on KDST with Class 2A 7th Ranked Cascade hosting 2nd Ranked Waukon in a District 4 matchup.  Both teams are 3-0 after winning their district openers last week.  The Cougars, who have allowed only six points this year, will look to slow down the Indians, who are averaging 45 point per game.  The pre-game show will begin around 7:10, with kickoff at approximately 7:30.

Beckman defeated Western Dubuque 3 sets to 1 in High School Volleyball Tuesday night.  The Blazers won the first two sets 25-16 and 25-10 before Bobcats extended the match with a 27-25 win in the third set.  The fourth set was close throughout before the Blazers closed out the match with a 25-20 victory.  Beckman improved to 9-3, while the Bobcats are 3-4.

Matt Tobin traded to Seahawks

Worthington native Matt Tobin will continue his NFL career in Seattle.  The Seahawks announced on Monday that they've acquired Tobin and a 2018 seventh-round pick from the Eagles, who get a 2018 fifth-round pick from Seattle.  Tobin, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Eagles in 2013, appeared in 42 games and started in 21 of those during his four seasons in Philly.  The addition of Tobin comes just three days after the Seahawks lost starting left tackle George Fant for the season.  Fant tore his ACL during Seattle's pre-season game on Friday.

Whitehawks Tournament Update

Second round action is underway in the Dyersville Whitehawks Semi-Pro tournament.  Last night, the Whitehawks defeated Holy Cross 10-0 and Balltown beat Peosta 9-6.  The tournament will resume Thursday with Ag Day.  Local dealers will have Ag equipment on display at the park beginning at 2 p.m., and there will be an Ag Forum from 4:30 to 6 with Dr. Larry Tranel, Representative Lee Hein and moderator Ken Root.  They will also have a rain simulator at the park from 3 to 3:30.  Other events include the farmers market from 2 to 5:30 and music by Darrel and the George's starting at 5.  Baseball begins at 7 with Bernard against Bellevue, followed by Dubuque against Key West.

Nic Ungs Named Director of Baseball Operation for Iowa Hawkeyes

Beckman grad Nic Ungs has been named Director of Baseball Operation for the Iowa Hawkeyes.  HeadCoach Rick Heller, who made the announcement Monday, said Ungs is a great fit for the baseball program and the University.  Ungs played college baseball for Heller at UNI and was taken in the 12th round of the 2001 draft.  He played professionally in the Marlins and Brewers organizations, including four years in Triple-A.

Beckman wins 6th Baseball Title with Coach Tom Jenk Jr. in Attendance

With Hall of Fame Coach Tom Jenk Jr. in attendance, the Beckman Baseball team capped off its season with the school's 6th title, defeating Kuemper 9 to 6 in Saturday's 2A championship game.  The Blazers scored 9 runs in the bottom of the 1st and held on to defeat the Knights, who finished runner-up for the second straight year.  Here is Beckman co-coach Fred Martin talking about the season.

You can view Martin's full address to the crowd at the welcome home ceremony on our Facebook page.  Paramount Ambulance Service provided transportation to the game for Coach Jenk and his wife Pam.  They enjoyed the game in a suite courtesy of the I-Cubs and the Iowa High School Athletic Association.  In Class 1A, Mason City Newman won its 6th title, defeating Martensdale/ St. Mary's 8-3, Assumption captured the 3A title, beating Harlan 10-1, and Johnston is the 4A champ, defeating Dowling 5-0 in the final game of the tournament.  A big thanks again to our sponsors for the 2017 baseball and softball season.

Beckman Advances to 2AState Title Game, will face Kuemper

For the 13th time in program history, the Beckman baseball team will be playing for a state title.  The Blazers advanced to the championship round with an 8-0 victory against Regina on Thursday.  Connor McDermott struck out 13 while limiting the Regals to 3 hits in the complete game victory.  Beckman's offense struck early, scoring three runs in the 1st, 2 in the 2nd and 2 more in the 3rd while collecting nine hits in the first three innings.  The Blazers will face Carroll Kuemper in tomorrow's title game.  The Knights defeated Centerville 6-2 Thursday night.  Kuemper is seeking its first title in what will be its 4th championship game appearance.  The Knights were runners-up in 2005, 2010 and 2016. Beckman Advances to State Baseball Semi-Finals, will Face Regina

Beckman's baseball team has advanced to state semi-finals. Jackson Bennett earned the win, going six inning with 10 strikeouts as the Blazers defeated Denver 7-1 in Monday's quarterfinal.  Beckman collected 10 hits as it won for the 30th time this season.  The Blazers will play Regina in the semi-final round at 5 p.m.  The Regals defeated Treynor 5-0 in their game on Monday.  In the other 2A games, Centerville defeated Estherville Lincoln Central 3-1, and Kuemper beat Van Meter 5-3.  Centerville and Kuemper play at 7:30 Thursday night.  The 2A title game is at 1:30 Saturday.

Beckman Clinches 18th Trip to State Baseball Tournament

Timely hitting, strong pitching and highlight-defense led Beckman past Cascade 5 to 0 in Tuesday night's sub-state final, clinching an 18th trip to state for the Blazers.  Jackson Bennett went 6 2/3 innings with 9 strikeouts and held the Cougars to 3 hits to earn the win.  Riley LeGrand, who had four hits, opened the scoring with a solo homerun in the first.  In the bottom of the third, it looked like the Cougars would get on the board as Bryce Simon hit one deep to center, but Sam Stelken's leaping catch kept it in the ballpark.  Cascade ends the season at 25-8.  Beckman, which earned it 29th win this season, will play in the state quarterfinals on Monday.  The pairings won't be released until tonight because the Wilton vs. Regina sub-state game was postponed.  They will play at 5 today in Solon. In Class 1A North Linn defeated Iowa Mennonite 2-0 to qualify for state.  The 1A pairings will also wait as one game was rained-out an another was suspended.

Beckman and Cascade Meet Again in Sub-State Baseball

For the third straight season, Beckman and Cascade will meet in sub-state baseball.  The Blazers defeated Monticello 5-2 on Saturday, while the Cougars beat Northeast 10-0 to win the district title.  Cascade won the 2015 sub-state matchup, while the Blazers edged the Cougars 2-1 in last years game.  Tomorrow night's game will be played at the Beckman Sports Complex in Manchester.  You can hear that game on KDST, with the pre-game beginning around 6:45.  The winner will play in the state quarterfinals next Monday at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Western Dubuque Begins Baseball Postseason Tonight, Beckman, Monticello & Cascade in Action Saturday

Western Dubuque opens the baseball postseason tonight, hosting Davenport Central at Farley Park. You can hear tonight's game on 99.3, KDST, and online at kdstradio.com. Tomorrow night we will have the Monticello @ Beckman game at 7, plus score updates from the Northeast @ Cascade district final.

Blazers Advance to District Final

Beckman has advanced to the district final round in the baseball playoffs.  The Blazers completed their game against Waukon last night, earning a 12-2 victory.  CJ McDermott started for Beckman and tossed four perfect innings as the Blazers ended the game in five innings via the mercy rule.  Beckman will now host Monticello Saturday night in the district title game.  You can hear that game on KDST and online.  Also on Saturday, Cascade will host Northeast.  The winner of that game and the winner of the Beckman/Monticello game will meet in the sub-state final Tuesday night in Manchester.

District Baseball 7/11

Area teams began postseason baseball action Tuesday night.  In Cascade, the Cougars defeated Camanche 10-0 in 5 innings.  Cascade jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, with all four runs scoring in wild pitches.  The Cougars added a run in the second and five in the third inning to complete the scoring.  Bryce Simon earned the win for Cascade, which will host Northeast in Saturday's district final. Northeast advanced with a 2-1 win against Bellevue.  In other Class 2A action, Monticello defeated Clayton Ridge/Central 3-0.  Ryan Manternach held the War Eagles to four hits to lead the Panthers to the district final.  Game two at Commercial Club Park was suspended after one inning due to lightning.  Beckman and Waukon will resume their game at 7 tonight at Jenk Field, with the scored tied at 2. You can listen to that game on 99-3 and online.  In Class 1A, Maquoketa Valley defeated Ed-Co 8 to 0, and North Linn beat East Buchanan 11-1in six innings.  The Lynx will host the Wildcats in a district semi-final matchup Thursday night.

Regals End Blazers Season in Regional Final

Iowa City Regina is headed back to the State Softball Tournament, denying Beckman a trip in the process.  Senior Sarah Lehman struck out 13 and held the Blazers to two hits in a 5-0 win Monday night.  Regina took the lead in the second inning when designated player Paisley Gardner hit a three-run homer.  The Regals added two more in the bottom of the sixth as they clinched their third consecutive trip to the state tournament, which begins Monday in Fort Dodge. Beckman ends the season at 30-12 and loses two seniors, Amber Boeckenstedt and Kelli Engelken.

District Baseball

Area teams begin district baseball tonight.  Jenk Field at Commercial Club Park will host at Class 2A double-header, as Monticello plays Clayton Ridge at 5, followed by Beckman against Waukon.  In Cascade, Northeast plays Bellevue at 5, then the Cougars face Camanche.  You can hear that game on KDST starting around 7.  The winners advance to the district finals Saturday night.  In Class 1A, Ed-Co plays Maquoketa Valley and North Linn plays East Buchanan, with those games in Troy Mills.

Beckman Plays for First Trip to State Softball

High School Softball continues tonight on KDST with #7 Beckman hosting 8th ranked Iowa City Regina in a 2A Regional Final.  The Blazers, who advanced with a 15-to-1 victory against South Winn on Friday, are playing for their first trip to the state tournament.  The Regals, who held on to beat Wilton 5-4 in the regional semi-final, finished second at state in 2016 after winning the title in 2015. You can hear all the action tonight on KDST and online, with first pitch at 7.  The winner will play in the state tournament in Fort Dodge next Monday.

Backed by a strong defense, Bellevue pitcher Grace Tath limited Cascade to four hits as the Comets defeated the Cougars 5 to 0 in Regional Softball Wednesday night.  Bellevue scored single runs in the 3rd,4th and 5th innings before adding two in the 6th.  Bellevue advances to play at Durant Friday night.

The Beckman Baseball team improved its record to 14-4 with a sweep against West Delaware Monday night at Jenk Field.  Jackson Bennett went the distance in the opener, leading Beckman to a 3-0 victory.  Bennett struck out 9 and held the Hawks to just two hits while adding an RBI single as the Blazers plated their three runs in the 5th inning.  Marshall McCarty took the loss for the Hawks, despite holding the Blazers to three hits.  In game two, Beckman edged West Delaware 2-1.  The Hawks struck first in the nightcap.  Colton Reid walked with one out in the third, and scored on a hit by Dunston Werner.  It would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the 7th.  Riley LeGrand led off the inning with a triple and Joel Vaske walked.  Two batters later, Brock Marbach hit one to deep left that just got past the fielder, scoring LeGrand and Vaske and giving the Blazers the sweep.  Vaske earned the win in relief of Sam Stelken, who struck out nine in six innings.  Reid Hogan, who faced only 23 batters and allowed three hits, took the loss for the Hawks, who are 8-8.

Beckman Boys Conclude Soccer Season at State Tournament

The Beckman Boys Soccer Team brought home a third-place finish from the State Soccer Tournament.  After falling to Regina in PK's on Friday, The Blazers defeated Gilbert 2-to-1 in Saturday's consolation game.  Freshmen Tom Jaeger scored the Golden Goal in the second overtime for Beckman, which ends the season at 19-2.

Beckman Boys Qualify for State Soccer

The Beckman Boys Soccer Teams is headed to state for the 6th straight year and 7th time in program history.  The two-time defending 1A champs advanced to state with a 4-0 win against Columbus on Saturday. Jaden Recker scored two goals, while Ben Palmer and Carter White each tallied one for the Blazers. Beckman earned the top seed and will play Sioux Center in the quarterfinals at noon on Thursday.  You can listen to that game on KDST and online at kdstradio.com. In the other 1A games, Regina plays Solon in the 4-5 matchup, second-seed Gilbert faces Council Bluffs St. Albert, and third-seeded Assumption plays Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.

Beckman Boys Playing for 7th Trip to State Soccer Tournament

The Beckman Boys Soccer Team is playing for another trip to the state tournament.  The two-time defending 1A champs host Waterloo Columbus tomorrow in the sub-state final.  Beckman is seeking its 6th consecutive trip to state.  The Blazers also qualified in 2010. Tomorrow's game against the Sailors begins at noon.

Blazers Advance, Bobcats Fall in Boys Sub-State Soccer

The Beckman Boys Soccer team has advanced to another sub-state final.  The Blazers defeated Bellevue Marquette 10-0 Wednesday night.  Beckman will host Waterloo Columbus at noon Saturday in the sub-state final.  The Sailors advanced with a 1-0 victory against Postville.  The Blazers defeated Columbus 1-0 in their regular season matchup on April 22nd.  Western Dubuque fell in second round action last night, losing 10-1 to Iowa City/City High.

High School Football Week 6

High School Football continues tonight on KDST with Western Dubuque hosting North Scott.  The Bobcats are 3-2 overall and 0-1 in district play, while the Lancers enter tonight's matchup at 4-1 and 1-0 in the district.  Our pe-game show will begin around 7:15, with kick-off at about 7:30.
